Prominent Family Connections of Frances Thomas Custis, Wife of John Beauchamp Jones

They were double third cousins once removed through one set of common ancestors who were first cousins that married and were probably connected further through other sets of ancestors. The following is based on the relationships through just Francis’s mother.

  • Abel P. Upshur, 3rd cousin once removed: Abel Parker Upshur (June 17, 1790 — February 28, 1844) was an American lawyer, judge and politician from Virginia. During the John Tyler administration, he was Secretary of the Navy (October 11, 1841 — July 23, 1843) and Secretary of State (July 24, 1843 — February 28, 1844). He was among six people killed on February 28, 1844, when a gun exploded during an official function on board the President’s steam warship USS Princeton.
  • Daniel Park Custis, 1st cousin 3 times removed: Daniel Lewis Parke Custis (October 15, 1711[1] — July 8, 1757) was an American planter who was the first husband of Martha Dandridge. After his death, Martha married George Washington.
  • Henry Alexander Wise, 1st cousin once removed: Henry Alexander Wise (December 3, 1806 — September 12, 1876) was an American lawyer and politician from Virginia. He was a U.S. Representative and Governor of Virginia, and US Minister to Brazil. During the American Civil War, he was a general in the Confederate States Army.
  • Sally Cable Parsons, known as Aunt Sally, Frances’s aunt and 1st cousin of Henry Alexander Wise. One source described her as a Baltimore socialite who introduced Jones to Frances.
