War of the Rebellion: from the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies and Navies

Extracts from the journal of Commander Semmes, C.S. Navy, commanding C.S.S. Sumter

Tuesday, June 18.—At length, after many vexatious delays, I have been enabled to leave the city of New Orleans. At 10:30 p.m. got up steam again and steamed down the river. Night clear and beautiful.
