Feb&#8217;y 1<sup>st<\/sup> 1863. Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Went to the Capitol today and heard the Chaplin D<sup>r<\/sup> Stockton. He is rather dry and tedious, his sermons this winter have been more of a <span class=\"underscore\">doctrinal<\/span>, than a <span class=\"underscore\">practical<\/span> character. I believe in <span class=\"underscore\">practical<\/span> Christianity and <span class=\"underscore\">practical<\/span> preaching. I dont suppose that I am very <span class=\"underscore\">orthodox<\/span>, for it does not matter much to <span class=\"underscore\">me<\/span> whether a man believes <span class=\"underscore\">this<\/span> or <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span> particular dogma, or belongs to <span class=\"underscore\">this<\/span> or <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span> denomination. If he <span class=\"underscore\">acts<\/span> like a <span class=\"underscore\">christian<\/span> from day to day. If he is always ready to <span class=\"underscore\">do<\/span> as he would be <span class=\"underscore\">done<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">by<\/span>. To <span class=\"underscore\">forgive<\/span> as he would wish to be <span class=\"underscore\">forgiven<\/span>, I am bound to believe that he has the <span class=\"underscore\">spirit<\/span> of Christs teachings in him and <span class=\"underscore\">is<\/span> a christian. After all my experience in the world I am much given to judging the <span class=\"underscore\">tree<\/span> by its <span class=\"underscore\">fruit<\/span>, professions of faith and all the \u201cthirty nine Articles\u201d to the contrary notwithstanding. After dinner I walked up to the \u201cStone Hospital,\u201d got very muddy. Staid there a couple of hours and walked back in a drizzling rain. Not many NY Soldiers there. <span class=\"underscore\">One<\/span>, Robert White, must have his foot taken off. He is a <span class=\"underscore\">brave<\/span> boy, not over eighteen, says he wants it done soon, as he can then go home after a little while, poor lad, he has much to suffer yet. He is from Westchester Co. of the 9<sup>th<\/sup> NY Militia. I have not been out since I returned. Got two good letters from home this morning, one from Wife, and one from Julia. They seem much elated because I spoke in my last of going home in a month or so.
