When we look into the <span class=\"underscore\">future<\/span> for our Country Dark days were those, and it looks dark now for the preservation of our Union. Our vast armies seem to be lying idle or baffled everywhere by our alert enimies. But worse than all there are indications of mutiny among ourselves. The weakness and imbecility of the Gov<sup>t<\/sup> manifested in the Management of the War has raised a storm in the north and west that looks dark and threatening. People are tired and sick of the war, and now the Political leaders <span class=\"underscore\">say<\/span>, and the mass of the people <span class=\"underscore\">believe<\/span>, that the <span class=\"underscore\">object<\/span> of the war is <span class=\"underscore\">now<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">not<\/span> what it <span class=\"underscore\">was<\/span> (to preserve the Union). But, to <span class=\"underscore\">free<\/span> the Negroes (an <span class=\"underscore\">abolition<\/span> War) and they <span class=\"underscore\">hate<\/span> abolitionists as well as the Negroes. Under present circumstances no <span class=\"underscore\">Union<\/span> or re-construction can take place. Nothing in fact but <span class=\"underscore\">crushing<\/span> the rebels, entirely <span class=\"underscore\">subdueing<\/span> them, can bring <span class=\"underscore\">Peace<\/span>. It dont <span class=\"underscore\">now<\/span> look as though we were <span class=\"underscore\">able<\/span> to <span class=\"underscore\">do<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span>, and in <span class=\"underscore\">any<\/span> case the South <span class=\"underscore\">say<\/span> they will accept No Terms short of their <span class=\"underscore\">Independence<\/span>. Well, the War must Continue for a long while yet. (Gold today 147). Got letters from home &amp; one from Lieut Belden from Lyons. Called and spent an hour with Mr Haws on I S<sup>t<\/sup>. I consider <span class=\"underscore\">him<\/span> a <span class=\"underscore\">rising<\/span> man. He certainly is a <span class=\"underscore\">thriving<\/span> one. There is no news in particular, quite a financial panic. If this miserable Congress does not adopt Mr Chase<sup>s<\/sup> measures, we shall go to <span class=\"underscore\">ruin<\/span> soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Wednesday January 14th 1863.
