This is surmounted by a cross of red cedar, twelve feet in height, on which is carved the following inscription: &#8220;Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.&#8221; On the base of the monument stands a granite slab, into which are cut the words, &#8220;Here 120 men, women and children were massacred in cold blood, early in September, 1857.
