Who wrote it? Be sure and tell me. It <em>is<\/em> a poem, and though entirely undeserved, I value it very much indeed.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">[Poem by a Lieutenant of the 16th N. Y., dedicated to Eliza Woolsey Howland]<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">To Mrs. Joseph Howland.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">________<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">From old Saint Paul till now,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Of honorable women not a few<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Have quit their golden ease, in love to do<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The saintly works that Christ-like hearts pursue.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Such an one art thou, God&#8217;s fair apostle,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Bearing His love in war&#8217;s horrific train;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Thy blessed feet follow its ghastly pain<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">And misery and death, without disdain.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">To one borne from the sullen battle&#8217;s roar,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Dearer the greeting of thy gentle eyes,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">When he aweary, torn and bleeding lies,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Than all the glory that the victors prize.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">When peace shall come, and homes shall smile again,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Ten thousand soldier hearts, in Northern climes,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Shall tell their little children, with their rhymes,<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Of the sweet saint who blessed the old war times..<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eliza Howland to Joe, Howland, her husband.
