We wound up with an auction. We asked Mrs. George Willson if she could not write a poem expressing our thanks to Mr. Backus and she stepped aside for about five minutes and handed us the following lines which we sent to him. We think it is about the nicest thing in the whole fair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIn ancient time the God of Wine<br \/>\nThey crowned with vintage of the vine,<br \/>\nAnd sung his praise with song and glee<br \/>\nAnd all their best of minstrelsy.<br \/>\nThe Backus whom we honor now<br \/>\nWould scorn to wreathe his generous brow<br \/>\nWith heathen emblems\u2014better he<br \/>\nWill love our gratitude to see<br \/>\nExpressed in all the happy faces<br \/>\nAssembled in these pleasant places.<br \/>\nMay joy attend his footsteps here<br \/>\nAnd crown him in a brighter sphere.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February 23.-\u2014We took in two hundred dollars to-day at the fair.
