Sunday, Dec.\u2014, 1860<\/em>.\u2014<\/em>In this season for peace I had hoped for a lull in the excitement, yet this day has been full of bitterness. \u201cCome, G.,\u201d said Mrs. F. at breakfast, \u201cleave your<\/em> church for to-day and come with us to hear Dr. ______ <\/em>on the situation. He will convince you.\u201d \u201cIt is good to be convinced,\u201d I said; \u201cI will go.\u201d The church was crowded to suffocation with the \u00e9lite of New Orleans. The preacher\u2019s text was, \u201cShall we have fellowship with the stool of iniquity which frameth mischief as a law?\u201d \u2026 The sermon was over at last and then followed a prayer \u2026Forever blessed be the fathers of the Episcopal Church for giving us a fixed liturgy! When we met at dinner Mrs. F. exclaimed, \u201cNow, G., you heard him prove from the Bible that slavery is right and that therefore secession is. Were you not convinced?\u201d I said, \u201cI was so busy thinking how completely it proved too that Brigham Young is right about polygamy that it quite weakened the force of the argument for me.\u201d This raised a laugh, and covered my retreat.<\/p>\n
