One room has five doors opening into the house, and no windows. The stairs are like ladders, and the colonel\u2019s contraband valet won\u2019t risk his neck taking down water, but pours it through the windows on people\u2019s heads. We shan\u2019t stay in it. Men are at work closing up the caves; they had become hiding-places for trash. Vicksburg is now like one vast hospital\u2014every one is getting sick or is sick. My cook was taken to-day with bilious fever, and nothing but will keeps me up.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Note: To protect Mrs. Miller\u2019s job as a teacher in post-civil war New Orleans, her diary was published anonymously, edited by G. W. Cable, names were changed and initials were generally used instead of full names<em>\u2014<\/em>and even the initials differed from the real person\u2019s initials.
