It has rained nearly all day, and the snow and water on the pavement is nearly over shoes in depth. I have kept very <span class=\"underscore\">close<\/span> only going from my room to the office and back except this evening I have spent an hour or two over with Cha<sup>s<\/sup> and \u201cSallie\u201d on 9<sup>th<\/sup>. Everything seems to remain quiet as it regards the War. But Union men feel more confident and in better spirits than they did a month ago. The opposition and traitorous movement North does not <span class=\"underscore\">look<\/span> so Serious as it did. The <span class=\"underscore\">agitators<\/span> seem somewhat frightened at their own doings. Much opposition has been made to the raising of Negro Regiments for the War. But if the Negroes will <span class=\"underscore\">fight<\/span> let us have them. Many say that the war has become an \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">Abolition<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">War<\/span>,\u201d \u201ca War against Slavery\u201d instead of a War for the preservation of the Union. There are <span class=\"underscore\">two<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">kinds<\/span> of Abolitionists just now. <span class=\"underscore\">One<\/span> kind perhaps make the abolition of Slavery the prime object and care more for that than they do for the Union. The <span class=\"underscore\">other<\/span> kind care much less about <span class=\"underscore\">Slavery<\/span>, in fact consider it but an incidental question compared with the Union, and are willing to <span class=\"underscore\">abolish<\/span> it, if <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span> will <span class=\"underscore\">abolish<\/span> the rebellion and in that spirit they \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">go<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">in<\/span>\u201d for the Presidents Proclamation of freedom. I go for using all the means that God and Nature has put into our hands to <span class=\"underscore\">crush<\/span> out the Rebellion. The <span class=\"underscore\">moral<\/span> effect of the proclamation will help us much throughout the world, and that <span class=\"underscore\">may<\/span> be its <span class=\"underscore\">greatest<\/span> advantage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Wednesday Feb. 18th 1863.
