The weather is mild and the snow melted fast, but it is about seven inches deep tonight on a level, a greater body of snow than we have had this three or four years. The side walks are deep with \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">spash<\/span>\u201d and I have not been <span class=\"underscore\">out<\/span> since I came <span class=\"underscore\">in<\/span> about four o&#8217;clock. I went from the office on to 7<sup>th<\/sup> S<sup>t<\/sup> and staid an hour at <span class=\"underscore\">Ballentines<\/span> Book Store looking over the books, Maps, and Photographs, did not <span class=\"underscore\">buy<\/span> anything. Came to my room with feet somewhat wet, but a good fire soon made \u201call right.\u201d There is no news of any fighting just now. The weather and the roads are not favorable for such amusements on land. An important Bill passed the Senate last night to enrol the whole Militia force of the U.S. No one <span class=\"underscore\">exempt<\/span> but governors of States, all betwen 20 &amp; 45 included and liable to draft. It passed unanimously. The <span class=\"underscore\">Rebellion<\/span> is to be <span class=\"underscore\">put<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">down<\/span> at <span class=\"underscore\">any<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">cost<\/span> of <span class=\"underscore\">men<\/span> and <span class=\"underscore\">money<\/span>. I am over \u201cforty five\u201d by 12 years but am not <span class=\"underscore\">realy<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">older<\/span> than many men of fifty. I <span class=\"underscore\">may<\/span> volunteer <span class=\"underscore\">yet<\/span> if necessary. I <span class=\"underscore\">am<\/span> a volunteer <span class=\"underscore\">now<\/span>. The members of the \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">Union<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">League<\/span>\u201d are all \u201cMinute Men\u201d \u201carmed to the teeth\u201d and always <span class=\"underscore\">ready<\/span>. We have <span class=\"underscore\">pledged<\/span> our <span class=\"underscore\">lives<\/span> in support of the Gov<sup>t<\/sup>. <span class=\"underscore\">Let<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Traitors<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">South<\/span> or <span class=\"underscore\">North<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">beware<\/span>. There will soon be an irresistable <span class=\"underscore\">power<\/span> in the land, ready for all emergencies.
