It is a fact (altho the \u201cpapers\u201d say nothing about it) that the \u201cArmy of the Potomac\u201d is on the <span class=\"underscore\">move<\/span>. One whole grand Division has gone on board Transports and down the River from Aquia Creek. Their destination is presumed to be North Carolina. In Tennessee and the S. West matters remain pretty quiet. Some skirmishing in which the Rebels usualy get the worst of it. At Vicksburgh an immense number of men are now at work on the <span class=\"underscore\">Canal<\/span> or \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">Cutoff<\/span>\u201d opposite the City which is <span class=\"underscore\">designed<\/span> to leave the City <span class=\"underscore\">inland<\/span> four or five miles. This <span class=\"underscore\">may<\/span> be a cheaper way of <span class=\"underscore\">opening<\/span> the Miss River than <span class=\"underscore\">taking<\/span> the City as it is said to be very strongly fortified and defended by 60,000 men. There was a great crowd on \u201cthe Av<sup>e<\/sup>\u201d this afternoon. I was in Taylors Book Store an hour reading \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">Ruttan<\/span>.\u201d Was also in \u201cAscension Hospital\u201d to see the soldiers. Met Mr Green from Lyons in the Pa<sup>t<\/sup> office today. Sent <span class=\"underscore\">Hon<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Ja<sup>s<\/sup> <\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">C<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Smith<\/span> Catalogue &amp; Circular from the Agricultural Dep<sup>t<\/sup>. Got a pa<sup>t<\/sup> office Report for myself. I am told that my name was proposed and I was unanimously voted <span class=\"underscore\">in<\/span> as a member of the \u201cUnion League,\u201d a secret society in this City. I think I will go and be initiated. The \u201cLodge\u201d meets on Thursday nights.
