{"id":15925,"date":"2023-01-26T01:33:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T06:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dotcw.com\/?p=12522"},"modified":"2020-09-23T11:19:30","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T16:19:30","slug":"horatio-nelson-taft-487","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cw-chronicles.com\/blog\/horatio-nelson-taft-487\/","title":{"rendered":"Diary of Horatio Nelson Taft."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Monday Jan&#8217;y 26<sup>th<\/sup> 1863<\/p>\n<p>Well, Gen<sup>l<\/sup> Burnside <span class=\"underscore\">has<\/span> resigned and \u201cfighting Joe\u201d Hooker is in command of the \u201cArmy of the Potomac,\u201d and Gen<sup>ls<\/sup> Sumner &amp; Franklin are relieved of their commands. <span class=\"underscore\">What<\/span> this last thing means remains to be seen, <span class=\"underscore\">Court<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Martials<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">possibly<\/span>. I dread the effects which these movements may have upon the Army. Every Gen<sup>l<\/sup> has his favorites and devoted friends who are always ready to Swear by him. Hooker is a gallant officer, he <span class=\"underscore\">may<\/span> be <span class=\"underscore\">the<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Man<\/span> for the <span class=\"underscore\">place<\/span>, we shall <span class=\"underscore\">see<\/span> soon. No other particular news today. Gold 150, the <span class=\"underscore\">highest<\/span> yet. The <span class=\"underscore\">Banks<\/span> of the Country are likely to defeat the measures for a niform U.S. Currency. Too many truckling M.C.<sup>s<\/sup> looking to a re-election, or interested in Banks at home. It would cut off their sale of <span class=\"underscore\">exchange<\/span> and then they could not \u201cburst up\u201d once in awhile and leave their worthless trash in the hands of the Laboring Classes. When will the people learn wisdom and proffit by experience. Little Kate Williams called on me today and staid an hour or two in my office after I had shown her through the Pat office. I called after dinner upon <span class=\"underscore\">Judge<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Scott<\/span> on NY Av<sup>e<\/sup>. Ex Gov Fairwell of Wis. was there. <span class=\"underscore\">He<\/span> is in the Pat O as Examiner, did not see Ex Gov Bashford, <span class=\"underscore\">he<\/span> being <span class=\"underscore\">out<\/span>. On my return called and spent the rest of the evening with Cha<sup>s<\/sup> &amp; Sallie, returned to my room after 10 o&#8217;clock. The weather is quite warm and I am writing at this time (near eleven o&#8217;clock P.M.) without fire, and am not uncomfortable. Weighed 142 lbs today on the Pa<sup>t<\/sup> office Scales.
