It brings to mind the exploits of Andrew Jackson. O that his old mantle and white hat were still in the \u201cWhite House.\u201d The present times require <span class=\"underscore\">his<\/span> energy, <span class=\"underscore\">his<\/span> fire and resolution. The Country has been calling for \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">Jacksons<\/span>\u201d to Lead our armies but as yet none has appeared. It is said that the <span class=\"underscore\">crisis<\/span> brings the <span class=\"underscore\">Man<\/span>, but the <span class=\"underscore\">Man<\/span> has not appeared as yet. Perhaps <span class=\"underscore\">the<\/span> crisis has not yet arrived, perhaps we have not yet <span class=\"underscore\">suffered<\/span> enough, have not sacrificed enough. We are not yet <span class=\"underscore\">humbled<\/span> enough, and our cause has not yet become <span class=\"underscore\">desperate<\/span> enough. Well, we must wait and suffer still. In Gods own time the black clouds of War will clear away and we shall behold again the sun of peace and National prosperity. Our news from Vicksburgh was premature. The City is not yet ours as was supposed. The Rebels are there in great strength but the City <span class=\"underscore\">must<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">fall<\/span>, but only after much hard fighting. Went to the <span class=\"underscore\">Pay<\/span> office again today and succeeded in geting the \u201cgreenbacks\u201d for Lieut Belden, at least fifty officers were waiting in the office. We <span class=\"underscore\">pushed<\/span> bye and got through in half an hour. There is nothing like <span class=\"underscore\">pushing<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">ahead<\/span> in these \u201cred tape\u201d offices. Called at Mr Hartleys this evening. \u201cMat[ty]\u201d has a bad cold and wants to see Julia. She is attending Madam [Burr<sup>s<\/sup> or Barr<sup>s<\/sup>?] School where they speak nothing but <span class=\"underscore\">French<\/span>. Julia would like <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span>.
