It has <span class=\"underscore\">rained<\/span> all the afternoon and I got <span class=\"underscore\">some<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">wet<\/span> in comeing from the office without my umbrella. <span class=\"underscore\">That<\/span> article is a servant that is frequently absent when most wanted, a fair <span class=\"underscore\">type<\/span> of the servants obtained at the \u201cContraband <span class=\"underscore\">Depot<\/span>\u201d in this City, only the advantage is decidedly on the side of the umbrella for <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span> is entirely subject to your will and pleasure, and will <span class=\"underscore\">go<\/span> if you carry it, and at least you cannot blame <span class=\"underscore\">it<\/span> for not being where you want it to be and is always <span class=\"underscore\">ready<\/span> to do its duty. Not so the \u201cContraband.\u201d He will <span class=\"underscore\">go<\/span> if you <span class=\"underscore\">drive<\/span> him, but is never quite <span class=\"underscore\">ready<\/span> or <span class=\"underscore\">willing<\/span> when there is <span class=\"underscore\">work<\/span> to do. His whole idea of <span class=\"underscore\">Freedom<\/span> is, \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">Nothing<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">to<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">do<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">and<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">plenty<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">to<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">eat<\/span>.\u201d Union faces look brighter today. There is now no doubt of our great success in Tennessee &amp; at Vicksburgh. \u201cAll hail the <span class=\"underscore\">Stars<\/span> and <span class=\"underscore\">Stripes<\/span>.\u201d It is a pity that the Rebel Army now in V.A. was not on the Miss. or out of the atmosphere of Washington where the (Quid nuncs) of the Gov<sup>t<\/sup> could not assume to control <span class=\"underscore\">our<\/span> Armies which contend with it. All our Generals are successful except those on the <span class=\"underscore\">Potomac<\/span>. Got letter from home today. \u201cValue\u201d has been rc<sup>d<\/sup> all Safe, contents duly appreciated, ought to have sent \u201cWillie\u201d a <span class=\"underscore\">Book<\/span>. Must send him one by mail. <span class=\"underscore\">Willie<\/span> must not be neglected.
