Diary.<\/p>\n<p>The New Year has opened beautifully, it has been a mild and bright day. The Departments of the Gov<sup>t<\/sup> have been (as usual) closed, and the whole City (Males) went at 12 o&#8217;clock to pay their respects to the President. The Foreign Ministers and the officers of the Army and Navy paid <span class=\"underscore\">their<\/span> respects <span class=\"underscore\">before<\/span> 12. I met Gen<sup>l<\/sup> Halleck at Mr Sec&#8217;y Chase<sup>s<\/sup>, Gen<sup>l<\/sup> Heintzelman and Gen<sup>l<\/sup> Meigs at Mr Sewards, Comodore Smith and Admiral Foot at Mr Sec&#8217;y Stantons, \u201clesser lights\u201d of both Army and Navy were quite plenty. The expected Proclamation is \u201cout\u201d tonight in the \u201cStar.\u201d It <span class=\"underscore\">carries<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">out<\/span> the one issued a hundred days ago. Mr Lincoln looks quite as well as he did a year ago. I have seen him frequently during the year. In the summer he used to ride out with a body guard of ten or twelve horsemen (Cavalry) round his carriage. I think he has dispensed with <span class=\"underscore\">that<\/span> of late. That was not done at <span class=\"underscore\">his<\/span> desire but at the desire of friends who feared for his life. Mr Seward <span class=\"underscore\">received<\/span> \u201c<span class=\"underscore\">in<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">State<\/span>.\u201d Six Policemen at and near the Door &amp; Hall, and a \u201cGentleman Usher\u201d at the parlor door anounced the name of each visitor in a loud voice as he entered the room. I suppose it was \u201cdone up\u201d in the <span class=\"underscore\">English<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">style<\/span>. No particular <span class=\"underscore\">news<\/span> today but indications of Army movements and more Battles. Assisted some today at an <span class=\"underscore\">extra<\/span> and realy luxurious Dinner given to the Patients at the Ascension Church Hospital. No <span class=\"underscore\">choicer<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">Bill<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">of<\/span> <span class=\"underscore\">fare<\/span> was to be found on any table in the City. The men were <span class=\"underscore\">feasted<\/span> on the greatest delicacies to their hearts content. I was in at \u201cWillards\u201d this evening, counted forty pairs of Shoulder Straps there at one time.
