However, the entry is provided unedited for its historical content and context.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Nov. 15, 1862<\/em>.\u2014Yesterday a letter was handed me from H. Grant\u2019s army was moving, he wrote, steadily down the Mississippi Central and might cut the road at Jackson. He has a house and will meet me in Jackson to-morrow.<\/p>\n<p>When Bessie J. and I went in to dinner to-day, a stranger was sitting by Mr. W.; a dark, heavy-looking man who said but little. I excused myself to finish packing. Presently Bessie rushed upstairs flushed and angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shall give Mr. W. a piece of my mind. He must have taken leave of his senses!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the matter, Bessie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, G., don\u2019t you know whom you\u2019ve been sitting at table with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat stranger, you mean; I suppose Mr. W. forgot to introduce him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForgot! He knew better than to introduce him! That man is a nigger-chaser. He\u2019s got his bloodhounds here now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see the dogs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I asked Hester if he had them, and she said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 Think of Mr. W. bringing him to table with us. If my brothers knew it there would be a row.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are your brothers? At college still?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, in the army; Pa told them they\u2019d have to come and fight to save their property. His men cost him twelve to fifteen hundred dollars apiece and are too valuable to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I wouldn\u2019t worry about this man, he may be useful some day to save that kind of property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, you can take it easily, you\u2019re going away; but if Mr. W. thinks I\u2019m going to sit at table with that wretch he\u2019s vastly mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Note: To protect Mrs. Miller\u2019s job as a teacher in post-civil war New Orleans, her diary was published anonymously, edited by G. W. Cable, names were changed and initials were generally used instead of full names<em>\u2014<\/em>and even the initials differed from the real person\u2019s initials.
