How glad I am for his mother\u2019s sake that Rob\u2019s lameness will keep him at home. Mr. F., Mr. S., and Uncle Ralph are beyond the age for active service, and Edith says Mr. D. can\u2019t go now. She is very enthusiastic about other people\u2019s husbands being enrolled, and regrets that her Alex is not strong enough to defend his country and his rights.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Note: To protect Mrs. Miller\u2019s job as a teacher in post-civil war New Orleans, her diary was published anonymously, edited by G. W. Cable, names were changed and initials were generally used instead of full names<em>\u2014<\/em>and even the initials differed from the real person\u2019s initials.
