Baltimore<\/span>, Monday, May 27.<\/span><\/div>\n
The writ of habeas corpus<\/em> issued by Chief Justice Taney<\/span>, for the body of John Merriman<\/span>, was returnable at noon to-day. Gen. Cadwallader<\/span>, in his reply, says the prisoner is charged with treason, and that he is authorized by President Lincoln<\/span> to suspend the writ of habeas corpus<\/em> in his case. He requests Judge Taney<\/span> to postpone action in the case till instructions from the President are received.<\/span><\/div>\n
Chief Justice<\/em>\u2014Have you brought with you the body of John Merryman<\/span>?<\/span><\/div>\n
Col. Lee<\/em>\u2014I have no instructions except to deliver this response to the Court.<\/span><\/div>\n
Chief Justice<\/em>\u2014The commanding officers declines to obey the writ.<\/span><\/div>\n
Col. Lee<\/em>\u2014After making that communication my duty is ended, and my power is ended, (riling and retiring)<\/span><\/div>\n
Chief Justice<\/em>\u2014The Court orders an attachment to issue against George Cadwallader<\/span>, for disobedience to the high writ of the Court.<\/span><\/div>\n
