Ardry and myself still in camp with the baggage. Both unwell.<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 24\u2014Division returns late to camp.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday, Dec. 25\u2014I preach from the song of the angels, &#8220;Glory to God, in the highest!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was the last Christmas of the war. It was Sunday, too.<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 26\u2014In camp. No mail for three days.<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 29\u2014Get into my winter quarters\u2014a wall of poles covered with cloth. Chimney of mud and sticks.<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 30\u2014Visit my brother, Allen Betts, in Co. C. 56th Regiment, just beyond Petersburg, near the enemy. Hear from my wife. Sick. God be with her!<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 31\u2014Last day of the year. Where shall we be the last day of &#8217;65?<\/p>\n<p>Some of us were at home with our loved ones, others in Heaven, and others\u2014dreadful thought! A man may fight and die for his country and lose his soul!
