The war would have occurred regardless of what happened in Charleston Harbor in the spring of 1861.

Other questions related to the war:

* Was the preservation of the Union worth the lives of the 204,000 who were killed in battle or later died from their injuries? (Over 413,000 died from illness)

* If the North had not fought to preserve the Union, would the Federals sided with Mexico and other Latin American and Caribbean nations when the Confederates pursued their dream of a vast slave empire to the south.

* Without the war, would the Confederacy have honored the rights of the States better than they did during the war.

lincoln said prior to the actual war he would not fire the first shot. President Davis in a letter to lincoln, that all the Confederacy wanted was to be left alone.

lincoln told the union commander at Sumpter to hold until relieved at all cost. He knew the Confederacy would take Sumpter in time. In time it did, however one must remember not one union man was killed or injured during the battle. Without death or injury to any union personnel is the taking of sumpter worth a million lives during the four years following lincoln's invasion of the South? I think not.

At this link, you mention the newspaper "American Citizen" which apparently was from Canton, Mississippi. My great-great-grandfather Seaborn Moses Phillips was a lawyer and apparently edited that paper. "Mose Phillips" as the Yazoo City Democrat newspaper referred to him, was elected Col. of the 10th Regiment Volunteers in Mississippi - he beat Joseph R. Davis (Jefferson's son) for the position, unanimously by his own company. He went to Pensacola, FL with the troops, but died of pneumonia on May 23, 1861. Joseph R. Davis had gone to work for his uncle Jefferson Davis which is why Joe did not replace Moses. Jefferson Davis mentions this in a brief comment in his papers.

Anyway, I'm wondering if in your collection you have copies of the American Citizen newspaper, and/or if you have anything on my great-great-grandfather. His son William was only 9 when he died and so unfortunately I don't know too terribly much about him. I can tell you that Seaborn Moses Phillips was son of Judge James Phillips, who was twice a Mississippi State Treasurer.

The following will be in an 1863 article to be published on June 24:

"A detachment of General Pleasanton’s cavalry pursued the enemy yesterday beyond Aldie, and while returning they were attacked in the rear by a band of guerillas. In the rear guard was Mr. L. Walter Buckingham, the HERALD correspondent with General Pleasanton’s command, and whose letters have frequently appeared in these columns, hurrying on with his despatches. While the rear guard, so suddenly attacked, was attempting to overtake the main body, we regret to say that Mr. Buckingham was thrown from his horse and killed instantly. His body was recovered, however, and buried by his companions."
